KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese Leads Postcard Protest Against Minority Scholarship Cut

Ernakulam, February 7, 2025— The Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) of the Verapoly Archdiocese launched a postcard protest on February 6 against the Kerala government's decision to slash minority scholarships by 50%. The protest, held at the Ernakulam Head Post Office, was led by the Church, emphasising that minority scholarships are not an act of charity but a fundamental right.

The first protest postcard was dispatched to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan by KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese President Rajeev Patric. Hundreds of postcards followed, demanding the restoration of full scholarship benefits, which support the education of thousands of financially struggling students.

Fr. Raphael Shinoj Aranchery, Director of KCYM Verapoly Archdiocese, condemned the decision, stating that the Church stands firm in defending the rights of the marginalized. "The Catholic Church has always championed education as a means of empowerment. Denying minority students their rightful aid is a direct attack on social justice," he said.

KCYM leaders, including General Secretary Rose Mary K.J., Treasurer Joyson P.J., and Executive Members Vinoj Varghese, Ferdin Francis, and Vypin Regional President Ruben Martin, vowed to escalate protests at regional and parish levels if the government fails to reverse its decision.

The Church-led initiative underscores a broader resistance against policies that undermine the rights of minority communities, reinforcing the Catholic Church’s role in advocating for educational equity.
