Lucknow, Feb 7, 2025 – The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has granted bail to Pastor Jose Pappachan and his wife, Sheeja Pappachan, who were sentenced to five years in prison under Uttar Pradesh’s anti-conversion law. The couple had been convicted on January 22 for allegedly violating the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.
Speaking to Catholic Connect, Mr. Shibu Thomas, founder of Persecution Relief, expressed gratitude for the swift legal proceedings. “It was quick, and I appreciate the court's efficiency. Securing a hearing date within just 3–4 days, especially in the High Court, Lucknow, was remarkable,” he said. The bail documents were filed last Friday, and by Wednesday, February 5, the case was taken up for hearing. “There were not too many discussions in the court, by God’s grace,” Mr. Thomas noted. While bail has been granted, formalities remain, and the couple is expected to be released within the next 3–4 days once all necessary documentation is updated.
Mr. Thomas strongly believes that prayer played a key role in the court’s decision. “There were around 500 sisters who were fasting and praying every day for this case,” he shared.Reflecting on the initial conviction, he admitted that they had hoped for an acquittal in the lower court but accepted the unfavourable verdict and decided to continue the legal battle. “I strongly believe that God has a purpose for everything He allows. It’s not just about blaming the other party; instead, we should approach things with a positive mindset,” he stated.
He also highlighted a significant legal precedent set by the High Court in a previous bail hearing, which affirmed that merely encouraging individuals to quit alcohol, distributing Bibles, or holding village meetings are constitutional rights. “There is already a chain of legal action happening in this case. I am not surprised by the bail decision because it was assured based on the papers. I believe that God has something greater in store—something beyond human comprehension. This verdict will positively impact those facing persecution across the country,” he added.
Mr. Thomas further shared that Pastor Pappachan remained strong throughout the recent ordeal. “God has strengthened him. Even during the trial, he was joyful and confident, saying, ‘Don’t worry, God is with me.’” The couple’s expected release is seen as a hopeful moment for the Christian community in India, reaffirming faith in both legal recourse and divine intervention.
