Agacaim, Goa, 29 March 2025 – 23 first-year BSc Botany students, from St. Joseph Vaz College visited Darwin’s Farm to gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture on 26 March.
The trip began with a briefing session, followed by a guided farm tour. Students engaged in interactive discussions with the farmer, observed fruit and vegetable cultivation, and harvested sweet potatoes. A refreshing welcome drink of fresh cashew and coconut niro set the tone for the day. They also explored the traditional fonddaro, an indigenous irrigation system, and enjoyed a farm-prepared lunch made from freshly picked produce.
A unique highlight was the farm’s “Orchard Rule” – students could eat whatever they plucked but could not take anything away. This hands-on experience deepened their appreciation for organic farming.
Farm owner Xavier Gracias, alongside his wife Fiona and son Dylan, warmly welcomed the students. “We are happy to host St. Joseph Vaz College for the second year. We encourage students to become advocates for agricultural revival in Goa,” he said. "Amchi mati, amchim xetam, sambhallunk utor ditam" (our land, our fields, let's take care of them together), was the slogan students proceeded with.
Students found the trip insightful and enriching. “I learned a lot about traditional irrigation,” said Sangharsh Santosh Kadav. “Harvesting sweet potatoes was exciting,” added Siddhi Shedge. “I now understand the practical side of gardening,” shared Anish Maurya. “The fresh fruit was delicious,” noted Vishakha Bandinadekar. “This trip inspired me to start my own kitchen garden,” said Astrid Fernandes.
Dr. Fr. Bolmax Pereira, Assistant Professor of Botany, concluded, “Field trips like these provide essential real-world exposure. We look forward to organising more in the future.”
The visit offered valuable learning, practical insights, and a renewed appreciation for sustainable farming
