Convention Held in Sambalpur, Odisha to Discuss Strengthening of Basic Ecclesial Communities

Sambalpur, Odisha, March 31, 2025 – The Pilgrims of Hope Diocese of Sambalpur organised a day-long convention for diocesan parish leaders, priests, and religious on Sunday at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Sambalpur in Odisha. The event aimed to educate the participants on strategies for strengthening Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) within the diocese.

Most Rev. Niranjan Sual Singh, Bishop of Sambalpur, inaugurated the convention with a heartfelt exhortation, encouraging attendees to embrace the true Christian way of life. He underscored the transformative role of BECs in deepening faith and urged participants to actively engage in spiritual growth and evangelisation, aligning their actions with the message of Christ.

Rev. Fr. George Jacob SAC, Executive Secretary of the CCBI Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities, served as the primary facilitator for the event. His inspirational talk emphasised that BECs are not merely a programme but a way of life that leads people closer to God, helping them navigate daily challenges with faith and hope. He also led a session on spiritual conversation methodology, guiding participants in developing a roadmap for implementing BECs in their respective parishes.

Sr. Meena Dangwar, a spiritual guide, provided a meticulous explanation of the steps involved in spiritual conversation, offering practical insights for effective community building. Additionally, Fr. Felix Lakra, the diocesan coordinator for BECs, facilitated group discussions, engaging participants in thought-provoking reflections on how to activate and sustain BECs within the diocese.

The day concluded with a solemn Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Bishop Niranjan, followed by the symbolic closing of the Bible, signifying the ongoing journey of faith.

The convention marked the beginning of a new phase for BECs in the Diocese of Sambalpur and was deemed a great success. Special recognition was given to Fr. Felix Lakra and Sr. Meena Dangwar for their dedicated efforts in organising this important event. The gathering served as a powerful reminder of the essential role of BECs in fostering vibrant Christian communities rooted in hope, unity, and spiritual renewal.
