New Delhi, 31 March 2025 – The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India (CBCI) has urged lawmakers to amend the Central Waqf Act to address land disputes, including the ongoing crisis in Munambam, Kerala. Over the past three years, more than 600 families in Munambam have faced legal uncertainty after the Kerala Waqf Board classified their ancestral residential properties as Waqf land. CBCI asserts that only a legal amendment can provide a permanent resolution.
The Waqf Amendment Bill is set to be introduced in Parliament, and CBCI calls on political parties and legislators to approach the issue with fairness and objectivity. The organisation insists that rightful land ownership must be restored to the affected families while ensuring that the constitutional rights of religious minorities remain protected.
CBCI emphasises that any provisions in the existing law that contradict the Indian Constitution and the country’s secular democratic values must be amended to uphold justice.
