Pope Offers Prayers for Flood Victims in India, Pakistan and Nepal

Vatican, August 18, 2025: Pope Leo remembered the victims of devastating floods in India, Pakistan and Nepal offering prayers for their families and for all those suffering the aftermath of the calamity. He made the appeal after leading the Angelus prayer on August 17 in Freedom Square (Piazza della Libertà) at Castel Gandolfo.

More than 300 people lost their lives following two days of torrential rains and flash floods that struck northwest Pakistan, India-administered Kashmir, and Nepal. In Pakistan’s Buner district, the storm left widespread destruction in villages such as Bayshonai Kalay. Officials confirmed that rescue teams evacuated over 3,500 stranded tourists, while landslides and damaged roads prevented workers from reaching cut-off communities.

Expressing his spiritual closeness, the Pope prayed “for the victims and their families, and for all those who are suffering as a result of this calamity.”

Reaffirming his broader concerns, Pope Leo renewed his call for an end to wars and for the pursuit of peace, urging that “in every negotiation, the common good of peoples may always be given priority.”

Turning to hopeful signs, he noted the encouraging news of cultural and evangelisation initiatives organised during the summer months, often in holiday destinations. Citing the recent youth mission in Riccione, Italy, he expressed gratitude to those who participated and underlined the creativity and commitment inspired by the Gospel across generations.
