Bishop James Shekhar Leads Relief Efforts in Flood-Hit Buxar, Bihar

Buxar, Bihar, August 17, 2025– Bishop James Shekhar of the Buxar Diocese has stepped forward to lead urgent flood relief in Jawaniya village, where around 200 homes were destroyed after the Ganges shifted course and swept through the community.

The sudden change in the river’s flow devastated the Shahpur block settlement, leaving families without shelter or livelihoods. Despite the absence of any Christian community in the village, the bishop mobilised immediate aid, underscoring a commitment to humanitarian service beyond religious lines.

“We tried to reach out, though we have no Christian presence in that village,” said Bishop Shekhar, who has been closely assisting the efforts. “Due to social media, the work received undue publicity. Please keep our diocese in your prayers.”

Church Steps In

Bishop Shekhar and his team have been distributing essential supplies, including dry rations, polythene sheets for temporary shelter, and basic medicines. His presence in the affected area has been widely noted, offering reassurance to families left vulnerable by the disaster.

While national and state authorities have deployed large-scale rescue and relief operations across Bihar, the bishop’s intervention highlights the role of local faith leaders in responding quickly to crises. His action mirrors the broader ethos of the Church in India, which has long been at the forefront of social and humanitarian service.

Statewide Flood Impact

According to government figures, more than 2.5 million people across 10 districts of Bihar have been affected by this year’s floods. Relief measures include the deployment of NDRF and SDRF teams, over 1,200 boats, and distribution of emergency supplies. Community kitchens and relief camps are operational across several districts, with Bhagalpur alone reporting more than 8,000 people rescued and 141 kitchens serving displaced families.

In Buxar, district authorities had earlier held flood-preparedness meetings to stock life jackets, medicines, and sandbags. Yet, the scale of damage in Jawaniya has revealed the unpredictability of the Ganges, which frequently changes its course, eroding villages and farmland.

A Call for Solidarity

Bishop Shekhar’s involvement in Jawaniya has been met with appreciation, particularly as he reached out to a community with no prior links to the diocese. His presence has reinforced the need for solidarity and compassion in times of crisis, regardless of faith or background.

As recovery efforts continue, the bishop and his team remain committed to assisting the displaced families. “This is a moment to stand together,” said one local volunteer. “What matters most is that help reaches those who need it the most.”
