Newly Established Cathedral in Myanmar Bombed; Catholics Vow to Rebuild

Myanmar, February 12, 2025 - The Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Mindat, designated as a cathedral just two weeks ago by Pope Francis, was severely damaged by airstrikes from Myanmar’s military regime on February 6. The attack occurred in Chin State, the country’s only Christian-majority region, amid ongoing conflict.

According to Fides, the information service of the Pontifical Mission Societies, the bombing destroyed the church’s roof and shattered its stained-glass windows, leaving the structure unusable. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as the area had been evacuated before the attack. News of the incident emerged only recently.

The cathedral had been officially designated by Pope Francis on January 25 as part of the newly established Diocese of Mindat. Local Catholics had been preparing for upcoming liturgical celebrations, including the consecration of Father Augustine Thang Zawm Hung as the first bishop of the diocese, when the attack occurred. The diocese serves nearly 14,000 Catholics across 23 parishes within a population of approximately 360,000, according to the Holy See.

The bombing comes amid escalating violence between the military junta and resistance forces following the 2021 coup, which toppled Myanmar’s elected government. Ethnic minority regions, including Chin State, have been severely impacted by military offensives, with churches and religious institutions frequently targeted.

Father Paulinus, a local priest, expressed the community’s sorrow and resilience. "Our church has been hit by bombs, and it is a wound in our heart. But we will not be defeated. We will rebuild," he told Fides. "We are certain that the Lord will 'bombard' us with his grace and blessing, bringing peace and prosperity to our people."

Following the attack, Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Yangon called on Catholics to pray for those displaced by the escalating violence in Myanmar.
