“My Heart is with Los Angeles”: Pope Francis Offers Prayers Amid Devastating Wildfires

Vatican, January 23, 2025: Pope Francis has called for prayers for the people of Los Angeles, California, as devastating wildfires continue to wreak havoc in the region. Addressing the faithful during his Wednesday General Audience, the Pope emphasized, "My heart is with the people of Los Angeles," acknowledging the fires that have destroyed entire neighborhoods and communities. He prayed for the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe, urging residents to remain hopeful through their diversity and creativity.

The Holy Father has been consistently vocal in his solidarity with those affected by the disaster. On Sunday, after the Angelus prayer, he expressed his closeness to the residents of Los Angeles County, praying for their safety amid the raging wildfires. Earlier, on Saturday, he sent a telegram to Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles, conveying his deep sorrow over the loss of lives and widespread destruction.

In his message to Archbishop Gomez, Pope Francis reassured the affected communities of his spiritual closeness, entrusting the deceased to God's mercy, and extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families. He also prayed for the tireless efforts of emergency personnel working to mitigate the catastrophe, imparting his blessing as a symbol of comfort and strength.

The wildfires, which have claimed at least 28 lives, destroyed over 15,000 structures, and scorched approximately 63 square miles, continue to pose a significant challenge. Pope Francis’s appeals underscore the urgency of global solidarity and prayer for the people of Los Angeles during this tragedy.
