Pope Leo XIV Marks Good Shepherd Sunday with Call for Vocations

Vatican City, 11 May, 2025 – On his first Sunday as Bishop of Rome, Pope Leo XIV marked Good Shepherd Sunday by reflecting on the Gospel reading that portrays Christ as the true Shepherd—one who knows, loves, and lays down his life for his sheep.

Calling the occasion “a gift from God,” the Holy Father expressed his joy at celebrating it with the global Church. He emphasised the significance of praying together for vocations, especially to the priesthood and consecrated life.

“The Church greatly needs them,” Pope Leo said, adding that the support of the wider community is essential. He stressed the importance of fostering environments where vocations are welcomed, listened to, and encouraged. Communities, he noted, should offer “credible models of generous dedication to God and to their brothers and sisters.”

Citing Pope Francis’ message for the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, Pope Leo encouraged the faithful to “welcome and accompany young people,” helping them to discover lives of service, love, and truth. “We ask God to help us all live in service to one another,” he said.

Turning his attention to young people, Pope Leo offered words of encouragement: “Do not be afraid! Welcome the Church's invitation and that of Christ the Lord!”

He concluded with a prayerful invocation: “May the Virgin Mary, whose entire life was a response to the Lord’s call, always accompany us in following Jesus.”

Pope Leo’s remarks were warmly received by the faithful, offering a pastoral tone that resonated deeply on a day traditionally dedicated to the call to spiritual leadership and commitment.
