Dibrugarh Diocese Explores Vatican II's Core Teachings

Dibrugarh, Assam, 24 October, 2025 — Bishop Albert Hemrom of Dibrugarh inaugurated a two-day diocesan study programme on three major constitutions of the Second Vatican Council — Sacrosanctum Concilium, Dei Verbum and Lumen Gentium — held at the Boniface Pastoral Centre on 21–22 October, bringing together around 100 priests and religious to prepare spiritually for the Jubilee Year 2025 through renewed understanding of the Church’s liturgy, Scripture and identity.

In his inaugural address, Bishop Hemrom expressed gratitude for Pope Francis’ call to the global Church to rediscover the core teachings of Vatican II during the Jubilee Year, stressing the importance of liturgy as the “source and summit of Christian life”, Scripture as the living word of God, and the Church as the pilgrim People of God.

Fr Dr Raphael Maiong SDB presented Sacrosanctum Concilium, tracing the history of liturgical renewal and emphasising that the Mass is the sacred action of the entire People of God, not the priest alone. He reminded participants that liturgical norms must be followed faithfully without additions or alterations.

Fr Dr Thomason MSFS provided key insights from Dei Verbum, underlining the divine inspiration of the Word of God and its central place in the life and mission of the Church. Fr Dr Carlus Barwa MSFS, presenting Lumen Gentium, highlighted the Church as the People of God with a universal call to holiness, where every baptised person shares responsibility in the Church’s mission.

Participants described the study as an enriching opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Church’s teachings in preparation for the Jubilee Year. “Now I understand clearly why it is wrong to perform ‘arti’ to the Eucharistic Lord after the doxology during the Mass. It is not part of the liturgical rite,” shared Sr Vinita FSMA.
