Christian Families Brutally Assaulted in Chhattisgarh Village

Chhattisgarh, 24 October 2025: A disturbing incident of communal violence occurred when ten members from four Christian families, including schoolchildren and senior citizens, were brutally assaulted on 22 October while having their meal.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers used sticks, cricket bats, bricks, bamboo poles, and footwear to beat the victims. The assault also included serious acts of sexual violence and humiliation. Mrs. Anita Bai Nureti was physically attacked, and her blouse and undergarments were torn, while her husband, Mr. Chintaram Nureti, said, “The perpetrators’ intention was to rape my wife.”

Among the injured were minor girls and boys, and senior citizen Mr. Laxman Jain, who reportedly lost consciousness for several hours due to the attack. The assailants also seized the victims’ mobile phones, allegedly at the direction of the village Sarpanch.

When the victims approached Durgkondal Police Station, they were allegedly met with threats of false charges and imprisonment instead of receiving protection. Police officials, including the SDOP and TI, discouraged them from filing a formal complaint, stating, “There is no point in registering a complaint; both parties assaulted each other. Equal action will be taken against both. Do a compromise and go home.”

Fearing for their safety, the victims fled the village and are now displaced about 15 km away, spending the night without food or shelter. The situation remains tense, and the families continue to live in fear.

This violence reportedly began following discrimination against Christian villagers for drawing water from a public hand pump, highlighting rising hostility toward the Christian minority in the area.

The Progressive Christian Alliance strongly condemns the brutal attack and calls on state authorities to ensure justice, protection, and rehabilitation for the affected families. It also appeals to all people of goodwill to pray for the safety, peace, and justice of the victims and their families.
