Pope Leo XIV: ‘We Must Lend Our Voice to Those Who Have None

Vatican City, 19 November 2025 — At today’s weekly General Audience in St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV urged the faithful to speak up for the voiceless and to care for creation as part of their Christian mission.

The Pope reflected on the story of Mary Magdalene at the empty tomb, pointing out how she did not immediately recognise the risen Christ. He said her moment of recognition symbolises how “Christian hope responds to the challenges to which all humanity is exposed today by dwelling in the garden where the Crucified One was laid as a seed, to rise again and bear much fruit.”

He further insisted that care for our planet and compassion for the marginalised are inseparable from faith. “This broad vision must never be separated from human contact, from a gesture of care, from the recognition of the concrete person in his or her fragility and dignity,” he stated.

In conclusion, Pope Leo prayed: “May the Spirit give us the ability to listen to the voice of those who have no voice. We will see, then, what the eyes do not yet see: that garden, or Paradise, which we will only reach by welcoming and fulfilling our own task.”
