Pope Leo XIV: AI Must Reflect the Design of God The Creator

Vatican City, 7 November, 2025: Pope Leo XIV has urged scientists, entrepreneurs, and pastoral leaders involved in artificial intelligence to anchor their work in respect for human dignity and the common good. In a message to participants at the Builders AI Forum 2025 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he described ethical technology as “a shared, ecclesial mission reflecting God the Creator’s design: intelligent, relational, and guided by love.”

“The question is not merely what AI can do,” the Pope wrote, “but who we are becoming through the technologies we build.” He emphasized that AI “springs from the creative capacity that God has entrusted to us,” and hence “technological innovation can be a form of participation in the divine act of creation.”

Stressing the moral dimension of technological decisions, he wrote that “every design choice expresses a vision of humanity” and encouraged developers to cultivate moral discernment in creating systems that reflect justice, solidarity, and reverence for life.

Pope Leo XIV highlighted that building ethical AI cannot be limited to laboratories or portfolios. “It must be a profoundly ecclesial endeavour,” he stated, noting that such work “illustrates the dialogue between faith and reason renewed in the digital epoch.” He urged participants to see their role as placing technology at the service of evangelisation and integral human development.

Finally, he affirmed: “Intelligence, whether artificial or human, finds its fullest meaning in love, freedom, and relationship with God.
