Diocese of Vellore Celebrates 73rd Anniversary of Its Establishment

Vellore, November 13, 2025 : Marking 73 years since its erection on 13 November 1951, the Diocese of Vellore celebrates “His unfailing love and abundant blessings throughout these seven decades of faith, service, and mission.” Established by Pope Pius XII, the diocese was formed from the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and the Diocese of Madras–Mylapore. Its early Christian roots were planted by Jesuits of the Karnatic, Mysore and Puducherry missions, later strengthened by the MEP Fathers and the Salesians of Don Bosco, who expanded pastoral, educational and social outreach.

Serving communities across Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Ranipet and Thirupattur districts, the diocese highlights its ongoing commitment “to shine as a beacon of faith, hope, and charity.” As part of its anniversary message, it offers a prayerful appeal:

“Lord, bless our Diocese of Vellore with holy priests, dedicated religious, and faithful laity. May we continue to bear witness to Your love and build a community rooted in justice, peace, and compassion.”

The commemoration ends with the invocation: “May Our Lady of Lourdes, Patroness of our Diocese, intercede for us and guide us always.”
