Rome, November 13, 2025 — Medical practitioners, philosophers and theologians convened in the Vatican for the international conference titled “AI and Medicine: The Challenge of Human Dignity.” Organised by the Pontifical Academy for Life and the International Federation of Catholic Medical Associations, the event brought together experts to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping healthcare and to highlight the ethical implications for human dignity.
Dr. Otmar Kloiber, Secretary-General of the World Medical Association, remarked that while AI offers faster diagnoses and more personalised therapies, it risks reducing human interaction and creating new social inequalities. “Technology, invading our spaces, can increase stress and create new inequalities,” he warned.
Fr. Renzo Pegoraro, President of the Pontifical Academy for Life, stressed the importance of viewing patients not as data but as human beings with emotions, fears and complexities. He called for transparency, nondiscrimination and ethical frameworks in AI development.
