Verna, Goa – 11 May 2025: The Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny (Cluny Sisters) inaugurated the new St. Joseph Vaz Hospital on 10 May, in Verna with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, marking a significant moment in their mission of compassionate and holistic healthcare.
Fr. José Remedios Fernandes, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman, presided over the Eucharistic Celebration, concelebrated by Fr. Lucio Dias, Parish Priest of Holy Cross Church, Verna, and Fr. Joaquim Fernandes SVD, Episcopal Vicar for the Religious. During the celebration, Fr. Remedios unveiled the commemorative slab, while the ribbon-cutting was jointly performed by Sr. Annis Kallarackal, Provincial Superior of the South West Province of the Cluny Sisters, and Sr. Narcissa Sequeira, former Superior.
In his homily, Fr. Remedios urged the faithful to remain rooted in Christ, stating, “Without Jesus, our lives are empty.” Quoting Pope Leo XIV, he reflected on peace as the gift of the Resurrection, reminding all that hospitals must serve not only as places of physical healing but also as spaces of spiritual renewal. “Jesus is the true healer,” he said, encouraging caregivers and patients alike to find solace in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament in the hospital chapel.
Fr. Remedios led the Rite of Blessing of the chapel and, together with fellow priests, blessed the entire hospital, invoking divine protection for all who would work or seek care within its walls.
Sr. Sandra Fernandes, Superior of the Verna community, expressed gratitude to Fr. Remedios and Sr. Annis, presented a token of appreciation. The Verna Parish Choir led the liturgical singing, while Alwyn Fernandes served as the liturgical commentator and master of ceremonies during the felicitation programme.
Key contributors to the hospital’s construction, including architects, contractors, and community superiors, were honoured during the event. Sr. Jeena Chacko, Provincial Councillor, outlined the hospital’s mission of delivering compassionate, holistic care, rooted in the values of the Cluny Sisters. Sr. Gracy Fernandes delivered the vote of thanks, bringing the ceremony to a heartfelt close.
