Chikmagalur, April 15, 2025: The diocese of Chikmagalur celebrated its annual Chrism Mass on the evening of Monday, April 14, 2025, at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Chikmagalur. Presided over by Bishop Rt. Rev. Dr. T. Anthonyswamy, the Mass brought together priests, religious, and laity from across the diocese.
A central part of the Mass was the blessing of the Holy Oils by Bishop Rt Rev. Dr T. Anthonyswamy. The three holy oils which were blessed were the Oil of the Sick, used for healing; the Oil of Catechumens, used for those preparing for baptism; and the Sacred Chrism, used for baptism, confirmation, and ordination.
These oils symbolise Christ's power to heal, strengthen, and make holy. The priests also reaffirmed their commitment to serving God and the community during the celebration.
In his homily, Bishop Anthonyswamy spoke about the shared calling of all who serve within the Church. He emphasised that despite differences in age or background, they are all united in Christ's priesthood. He also explained that the day was not just about blessing oils but also about celebrating their shared mission to serve as shepherds in Christ's image.
The evening also included a celebration of young artistic talent. Rev. Fr. Adarsh, Secretary of the Bible Commission, announced the results of the diocese-wide Bible drawing competition held in January. Children from grades 1 to 10 participated in the competition, illustrating biblical themes with creativity and devotion. The parish priests of the top three winners of the competition received prizes on behalf of the children.
Concluding the ceremony, Fr. Marcel Pinto, Joint Secretary of the Liturgy Commission, expressed heartfelt thanks to all participants and organisers. The Chrism Mass stood as a powerful testimony to the living faith and unity of the Diocese of Chikmagalur.
