Kunkuri, Chhattisgarh, April 15, 2025: The administration of Holy Cross Nursing College in Kunkuri is planning to take legal steps to challenge the allegations and FIR filed against Sister Bincy Joseph, the principal of the college, by one of its students. The student claims that Sister Bincy pressured her to convert to Christianity.
According to a senior member of Sister Bincy's religious congregation who spoke to Catholic Connect on condition of anonymity, a local court had rejected Sister Bincy's anticipatory bail application on April 11. The member also mentioned that on Sunday, the college’s administrator was summoned by local police to provide clarification regarding a counter-FIR filed by members of Sister Bincy’s congregation against the allegations made by the student.
Meanwhile, on Monday, the Catholic community of Kunkuri organised a large rally to show support for Sister Bincy. The demonstration saw participation from Catholic and non-Catholic students of the nursing college, as well as members of Catholic religious congregations from neighbouring areas. All the protesters denounced the allegations levelled against Sr. Bincy, calling them false and unfounded.
The senior member of Sister Bincy's congregation who spoke to Catholic Connect expressed strong disbelief in the accusations and emphasised Sister Bincy's dedication to education. The member also raised concerns about the seizure of important college records by the collector’s team, which have not yet been returned. "This case is of great importance," she stated, pointing out the potential targeting of Catholic institutions.
However, despite all the ongoing legal and social challenges, the senior member remained resolute, saying, “We must remain steadfast and fight for justice, with the support of the broader community and our faith."
