Nalbari, Assam — December 26: Police in Assam’s Nalbari district arrested activists linked to the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal on Christmas Day for allegedly vandalising Christmas decorations at a Christian school ahead of festive celebrations.
According to officials, the arrests were made following an incident at St Mary’s English School in Panigaon, where Christmas-related decorations and materials were reportedly damaged. The incident occurred on December 24, a day before Christmas, prompting the school authorities to lodge a formal complaint.
Based on the complaint filed by the school principal, a group of individuals allegedly entered the school campus, damaged decorations and set some materials on fire. The group is also accused of raising slogans including “Jai Shri Ram”, “Jai Hindu Rashtra” and “Bharat Mata Ki Jai” during the incident.
Police said that a case was registered under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita after the complaint was received. Following the registration of the case, four people were taken into custody. Those arrested reportedly include senior local leaders associated with the VHP and Bajrang Dal.
Officials stated that the alleged vandalism took place shortly before Christmas celebrations were scheduled to be held at the school. The damage to decorations and materials disrupted preparations for the festival, prompting swift action from the authorities.
The police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full sequence of events and to determine whether others were involved in the incident. Further action will be taken based on the outcome of the investigation, officials added.
The arrests come amid heightened sensitivity around religious celebrations and communal harmony during the festive season. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring that religious institutions and educational establishments are protected from acts of vandalism or intimidation.
No injuries were reported in the incident. Police have not yet released additional details regarding possible charges or the next course of legal proceedings.
