New Delhi, December 26, 2025 — Prison Ministry India (PMI) celebrated Christmas at Nawada, Delhi, on December 18, bringing together clergy, religious, volunteers, Vidyajyoti Brothers, and inmates from Tihar Jail who are currently out on bail.
The programme, held in the evening, focused on the Christmas message of faith, hope, and reconciliation, highlighting God’s presence among people experiencing vulnerability and transition.
The central moment of the celebration was the Holy Eucharist, presided over by Bishop Deepak Tauro of the Archdiocese of Delhi. In his presence and prayer, the gathering reflected on Christ as Emmanuel—God with humanity—especially in situations marked by pain and the search for new life.
Priests associated with PMI participated in the celebration, including Fr. Sebastian Thekkanath, the newly appointed PMI Coordinator for the North Region, along with Fr. Joyson, Fr. Ivan, and Fr. Edwin SJ, expressing their support for the ministry’s mission.
The liturgy was animated by the Vidyajyoti Brothers, whose choir supported the prayerful atmosphere. PMI volunteers, including religious sisters and lay collaborators, were also present, continuing their accompaniment of inmates and former inmates through pastoral care and outreach.
A brief sharing session followed, coordinated by Sr. Inigo, who has been closely involved in supporting inmates and those released on bail. Former inmates shared personal reflections on struggle, healing, and renewed hope, acknowledging the role of accompaniment and encouragement in their journey towards reintegration.
Among those who shared were Advocate Dilip Paswan, a released inmate from Bihar, and Richard from Venezuela, who also offered a musical reflection. Others present included former inmates from different countries, reflecting the diverse backgrounds served by the ministry.
The celebration concluded with a fellowship meal, symbolising communion and equality, as participants shared food and conversation. The Christmas programme at Nawada reaffirmed PMI’s commitment to bringing the message of hope and dignity to those connected with the prison system, marking the feast not merely as a celebration, but as an encounter rooted in faith and solidarity.
