Modi Attends Christmas Service at Delhi Cathedral Amid Concerns Over Attacks on Christians

New Delhi, Dec 25, 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday attended the Christmas morning service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption in the national capital, joining a large congregation from the Christian community. The visit, marked by prayers, carols and hymns, comes at a time when Christian groups across the country have raised concerns over a spate of attacks and disruptions targeting churches, prayer meetings and Christmas-related events.

The service included a special prayer for the Prime Minister led by the Bishop of Delhi, Dr. Paul Swarup. Following the visit, Mr. Modi posted a message on social media platform X, extending Christmas greetings and invoking the values associated with the teachings of Jesus Christ. “Wishing everyone a joyous Christmas filled with peace, compassion and hope. May the teachings of Jesus Christ strengthen harmony in our society,” the Prime Minister wrote.

Officials said the Prime Minister’s message underlined the enduring ideals of love, service and brotherhood, and their relevance in fostering social harmony and mutual respect.

However, the visit has drawn mixed reactions from sections of the Christian community and civil society groups, who note that it comes against the backdrop of repeated incidents of intimidation and violence against Christians in recent weeks. Across several States, Christmas carol services, prayer gatherings and community celebrations have faced objections, disruptions or alleged attacks by right-wing groups, with some events cancelled following protests.

Church leaders and rights groups have said that while symbolic gestures and festival greetings are welcome, they do little to address the deeper concerns of insecurity and fear among minorities. “The community expects more than theatrics,” a senior church representative said, pointing to the need for clear assurances of protection, swift action against perpetrators of violence and a strong public message against hate and vigilantism.

Opposition leaders and minority rights activists have also questioned the government’s response to the recent incidents, alleging selective silence and inadequate enforcement of the law. They argue that high-profile visits and statements must be matched by concrete steps on the ground to uphold constitutional guarantees of freedom of religion and equal citizenship.

As Christmas celebrations continue across the country, Christian organisations have reiterated their call for peace and harmony, while urging the Union government and State authorities to ensure that worship and festivities can be conducted without fear or disruption.
