Udupi Churches Hold Special Prayers for Indian Army Following CCBI Directive

Udupi, May 12, 2025: Parishes across the Diocese of Udupi held special prayers on Sunday, May 11, for the Indian Army and its soldiers, following a directive from the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI). The prayers, conducted during the Sunday Eucharistic celebrations, aimed to seek divine protection and strength for troops stationed at the nation’s borders. Clergy across the diocese led the faithful in invoking blessings for the armed forces, accompanied by the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. The initiative came amid rising concerns over border tensions, particularly along the India-Pakistan Line of Control.

Bishop of Udupi, Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, currently on his annual pastoral visit, presided over the prayer service at St Joseph Church, Belman in Karkala taluka. In his address to the congregation, he lauded the courage and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and stressed the importance of continued public support and prayer for their well-being.

The bishop also offered prayers for Pope Leo XIV, newly elected as the head of the Catholic Church, expressing hopes for his spiritual leadership to inspire peace and unity worldwide. The observance coincided with the Feast of the Good Shepherd, which Bishop Lobo described as symbolically significant during these times of global and regional uncertainty.

Referring to Pope Leo XIV’s recent appeal for peace through dialogue and mutual understanding, Bishop Lobo urged both India and Pakistan to reject violence and pursue lasting peace. He expressed optimism that collective prayer and solidarity with the armed forces would fortify their resolve and lead to a more harmonious future.

Fr Fred Mascarenhas, parish priest of Belman Church; assistant priest Fr Arnold Mathias; and Fr Clement Mascarenhas, parish priest of Christ the King Church, Karkala, were also present at the service.
