Kalimpong, Darjeeling, 9 May, 2025 – In a moment of spiritual significance, the Diocese of Darjeeling celebrated the ordination of seven new priests at St. Augustine’s School hall on Friday. Bishop Stephen Lepcha, Bishop of Darjeeling, presided over the sacred liturgy, joined by a large number of concelebrating priests from within the diocese and neighbouring regions.
The ordinands— Alphonse Ghimirey, Benai Chettri, Clinten Rock Lepcha, Joachim Tamang, Marcus Lepcha, Silas Lepcha, and Sion Rai—were solemnly presented before a packed congregation of clergy, laity, and well-wishers. Their ordination marked a profound commitment to serve God and the Church.
The ceremony was rich in tradition and marked by deep spiritual fervour. In his homily, Bishop Lepcha spoke of the priesthood as a calling to humility, selfless service, and pastoral dedication, particularly within the distinct cultural and spiritual fabric of the hill communities.
St. Teresa’s Church choir led the congregation in devotional hymns, heightening the prayerful atmosphere. The active participation of parish representatives, family members, and faithful from across the region reflected the communal spirit of the occasion.
A felicitation programme followed the ordination, where the newly ordained were warmly congratulated. The day concluded with a fellowship meal, celebrating unity and the shared joy of the diocesan family.
This ordination stands as a milestone in the Diocese of Darjeeling’s journey, symbolising spiritual renewal and the continued growth of the Church’s mission in the hills.
