Pope Leo XIV's Coat of Arms Highlights Marian Devotion, Sacred Heart, and Call to Unity

Vatican City, 10 May, 2025– The newly unveiled coat of arms of Pope Leo XIV offers profound insight into the central themes of his pontificate: deep Marian devotion, reverence for the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and a call to unity rooted in faith.

The coat of arms is divided into two symbolic halves. On the left, a white lily set against a blue background signifies purity and innocence—traditional attributes of the Blessed Virgin Mary. For Pope Leo XIV, however, the symbol goes beyond tradition. It highlights Mary's vital role as the Church's guiding model of humility, obedience, and complete surrender to God.

On the right side, a pierced Sacred Heart placed over a closed book evokes the redemptive love of Christ and the enduring mystery of God's Word. The closed book serves as a reminder that divine truths are not always immediately accessible, urging the faithful to trust, persevere, and continually seek understanding through faith.

Beneath the shield, the Pope's motto reads: "In Illo uno unum"—translated as "In Him who is One, we are One." Inspired by St Augustine, the phrase underscores the Pope's vision of a Church united not through rigid uniformity, but through the transformative love found in Christ.

The design has already drawn admiration for its spiritual depth and theological resonance, setting a tone for Pope Leo XIV’s mission to renew the Church through devotion, mystery, and unity.
