Sacred Music Concert Held at St. Anthony’s Chapel, Old Goa

Old Goa, March 31, 2025 – A special sacred music concert was held at St. Anthony’s Chapel in Old Goa on Sunday evening, offering a profound spiritual experience during the Lenten season. Organised by Fr. Romeo Monteiro, Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Goa and Daman and Director of the Western Music Department at Kala Academy, the event featured a diverse repertoire of Catholic sacred music. Held as part of the Archdiocese’s Lenten observances, the concert was graced by the presence of Archbishop Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrão. It served as a celebration of the beauty of Catholic music, allowing the faithful to reflect on the mysteries of faith through the power of song.

In his opening address, Fr. Monteiro warmly welcomed all attendees. Archbishop Ferrão commended Fr. Monteiro and his team for curating "a profound musical meditation on the Passion of Christ". He emphasised the significance of Lent, stating, "The season of Lent is a time of deep reflection on the Passion of Jesus and the joy of His Resurrection. In this context, tonight’s concert is truly special."

The concert featured a 62-member ensemble comprising a four-part adult choir (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass), a children’s section, and a full orchestra with string, wind, and brass instruments. The ensemble performed an eclectic selection of sacred hymns and motets in English, Konkani, and Latin.

Notable performances during the concert included the Hymn of the Jubilee Year 2025 (on Hope), Khorench Sangtam Pedru Tuka (a Konkani motet), Stabat Mater (English translation) by German composer Josef Rheinberger, Ho Poi Taka Ami Polletanv (a traditional Konkani Veronica song), Koxttovta Jiv Mhozo (a Konkani motet), Worthy is the Lamb Who Was Slain (from The Messiah by G. F. Handel), and Bapa Porim Doyall Zayat (a hymn). Additionally, the choir performed Vochat, Xubhvortoman Porgott Korat, inspired by the theme of the Pastoral Year 2024-25.

A defining aspect of the concert was its strong sense of community participation. The 62 performers, though not professional musicians, were devoted Catholics and sacred music enthusiasts who came together for this special occasion. Enhancing the reflective atmosphere, Divina Dias led the congregation in meditative reflections, guiding attendees through moments of prayerful contemplation.

Expressing his gratitude, Fr. Romeo Monteiro thanked all who contributed to the success of the concert, acknowledging the dedication of the performers and organisers who worked tirelessly to create this unique spiritual experience.

The concert was a moving blend of sacred music, reflection, and community spirit, leaving attendees deeply touched. The next performance of this sacred music concert is scheduled to take place at Betalbatim Church on March 31, 2025, with Bishop Simião Fernandes as the Chief Guest.
