Populism, Polarization, and Post-Truth: Derek O'Brien's Warning on Democracy at Loyola

Chennai, February 20, 2025 – At Loyola College’s centenary celebrations, Member of Parliament Derek O’Brien delivered a stirring speech on World Social Justice Day, honouring Jesuit contributions to education, justice, and democracy. He dedicated his address to Fr. Jerome D’Souza and Fr. Stan Swamy, calling on students and faculty to defend their legacy and speak truth to power.

Removing his outer shirt, O’Brien revealed a T-shirt featuring Fr. Stan Swamy’s image, urging, “Don’t be shy of your legacy. Celebrate Fr. Stan Swamy.”

The Jesuit Legacy of Justice

O’Brien paid tribute to Fr. Jerome D’Souza, SJ, a member of India’s Constituent Assembly (1946-1950), who fought for the rights of minorities and the underprivileged. He reminded the audience of the Jesuit martyrs of Japan, emphasising the Jesuits’ long-standing commitment to justice.

Democracy and the Three P’s: Populism, Polarization, and Post-Truth

Quoting Venezuelan writer Moisés Naím, he warned, “We are witnessing a tendency that seeks to reformulate the basis of political legitimacy. Democracy is being diluted.” He cited Fr. Arturo Sosa Abascal, SJ, the Jesuit Superior General, who identified Populism, Polarisation, and Post-Truth as tools of autocratic regimes.

“Autocrats create uncertainty in personal, work, and family life, making people doubt everything except their word,” O’Brien stated, urging institutions to counter disinformation and protect democratic values.

Jesuit Education and the Call for Justice

Quoting Fr. Pedro Arrupe, SJ, he challenged Jesuit institutions: “Have we educated you for justice? No, we have not.” He urged Loyola College to ensure its education serves justice and responds to the world’s needs.

Criticising silence on Fr. Stan Swamy’s incarceration, O’Brien urged, “Jesuit institutions have a history of speaking truth to power. Why the silence now?”

Three Calls to Action

He outlined three steps for Loyola College and other Jesuit institutions:

1. Open institutions for human rights movements—He praised a Jesuit college in Ahmedabad for hosting activists, encouraging others to follow.

2. Reorient alumni associations—Beyond social events, alumni must engage in justice initiatives, including Fr. Stan Swamy’s cause.

3. Promote Fr. Stan Swamy’s legacy—He proposed instituting Fr. Stan Awards, Scholarships, and Memorials.

O’Brien concluded with St. Ignatius of Loyola’s Prayer of Generosity, inspiring students to embrace the Jesuit mission of service and justice.
