Pope Francis' Coffin Sealed in Private Ritual Ahead of Funeral

Vatican City, April 25, 2025 — In a solemn and sacred ritual held behind closed doors, the coffin of His Holiness Pope Francis has been officially sealed, marking the final chapter in the life of one of the most influential spiritual leaders of the 21st century. The intimate ceremony comes ahead of the public funeral scheduled for Saturday, drawing global attention and heartfelt tributes from millions around the world.

The sealing of the coffin is a deeply symbolic moment in the Catholic tradition, signifying the closing of a life devoted to service, humility, and peace. Presided over by senior members of the Vatican Curia and trusted aides of the late pontiff, the ritual took place in the Vatican Apostolic Palace in the presence of close clergy and longtime members of the papal household.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis became the 266th Bishop of Rome and the first pope from the Americas in 2013. Known for his compassion, reformist views, and tireless advocacy for the poor and marginalized, his papacy marked a significant departure from convention and drew admiration from both religious and secular communities.

The coffin, made of cypress wood in keeping with tradition, contains relics, papal medals, and a lead tube holding a sealed scroll that summarizes the life and work of Pope Francis. The sealing was followed by prayers and moments of silence as those present paid their final respects.

World leaders, religious figures, and faithful from all corners of the globe are expected to gather at St. Peter’s Basilica for the funeral Mass, which will be led by Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re. The Vatican has announced that large screens will be installed throughout Rome to accommodate the thousands expected to participate in the public farewell.

As bells toll across the Vatican, the Church prepares to bid farewell to a shepherd who guided it through times of change, challenge, and renewal.
