Agra, 25 April, 2025 — The Archdiocese of Agra held a solemn Requiem Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on Thursday, mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, who died on Easter Monday, 21 April.
Raphy Manjaly, Archbishop of Agra, presided over the liturgy, which drew hundreds of faithful from across the region. The cathedral, renowned for its Gothic Revival architecture, resounded with prayers and hymns as clergy, religious, and laity paid tribute to the beloved pontiff.
In his homily, Archbishop Manjaly praised Pope Francis as a “shepherd who walked with his people”, emphasising his commitment to the marginalised, his calls for ecological justice, and his leadership marked by humility and mercy. “His voice was a beacon of peace and reconciliation in our time,” he said.
Archbishop Emeritus Albert D’Souza also attended, symbolising unity and continuity within the Archdiocese.
To mark the Pope’s funeral in the Vatican on Saturday, 26 April, Archbishop Manjaly declared a day of mourning and holiday for all institutions under the Archdiocese’s jurisdiction. The faithful are encouraged to participate in special prayers and Masses in their parishes or unite spiritually with the rites in Rome.
The Mass in Agra mirrored similar memorials across the globe, expressing the Church’s shared grief and reverence for Pope Francis. His legacy of compassion and servant leadership will continue to inspire Catholics in India and worldwide.
