Pope Leo Warns That Modern Financial Investments Come at ‘Bloody Price’

Vatican City, 17 December 2025: In his weekly General Audience address at St Peter’s Square, Pope Leo XIV issued a stark warning about contemporary financial practices, saying that today’s financial investments often come at a “bloody price of millions of human lives” and contribute to the devastation of the natural world. The Pope highlighted the human cost of economic decisions that prioritise profit over ethical considerations, urging a deeper reflection on where individuals and societies place their true values.

Speaking to the faithful gathered for the audience, the Pope observed that many people find themselves constantly busy with worldly activities, striving for success or material gain, but still feel empty and unsatisfied. He emphasised that while daily life involves inevitable choices, responsibilities and challenges, focusing merely on temporal achievements can distract individuals from what he described as the true purpose of life.

Pope Leo stressed that faith teaches believers to find rest not in material wealth but in spiritual truth, centring their lives on the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. He asked whether people should simply wait for life to unfold or actively allow their faith to transform their actions in the present.

Turning to the issue of financial behaviour, the Pope said that storing “treasure” in earthly and temporal things, especially through unjustly concentrated investments, often results in “millions of human lives” being sacrificed, as well as significant harm to creation. He urged the faithful to examine where their “treasure” lies and to redirect their priorities toward outcomes that uphold human dignity and ecological stewardship.

According to the Vatican News report, Pope Leo encouraged participants to slow down, look into their hearts and embrace the peace and joy that come from living according to the deeper teachings of Christianity. He reminded them that true fulfilment is not found in accumulating wealth or achievements, but in aligning life choices with values that promote human flourishing and respect for creation.

The General Audience message reflects ongoing Vatican concerns about ethical economics, social justice and environmental responsibility, urging a reevaluation of global priorities in light of human and ecological costs.
