Pope Expresses Deep Sadness Over Deadly Terrorist Attack in New Orleans

Vatican City, January 2, 2024 - Pope Francis has expressed his "deep sadness" following a terrorist attack in New Orleans on January 1 that resulted in the deaths of 15 people and left dozens wounded. The attack occurred when a 42-year-old man, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, drove a rented pickup truck at high speed into a crowd in the French Quarter of the city. The assailant was later killed in a gunfight with police, and authorities suspect that other individuals may also have been involved in the attack. The FBI confirmed that an Islamic State flag was found in the truck, and U.S. President Joe Biden suggested that the attack was inspired by the terrorist group.

In a telegram sent to Archbishop Gregory Aymond of New Orleans, Pope Francis assured the city of his “spiritual closeness” and commended the victims of the attack to “the loving mercy of Almighty God.” He also conveyed his prayers for those affected by the violence, offering a blessing “as a pledge of peace and strength in the Lord.” The message, signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, also expressed sorrow for the loss of life and injury caused by the attack.

Archbishop Aymond, in his own statement, also condemned the attack, calling it “a sign of utter disrespect for human life.” He expressed his gratitude to law enforcement and medical personnel for their heroism in responding to the tragedy. He also extended his prayers to the victims of the attack and their families, emphasizing the need for unity and peace in the face of such violence.

The attack follows another violent incident on the same day when a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. The driver of the vehicle was killed, and seven others were injured in the blast. Authorities are investigating whether the explosion was an act of terrorism and are exploring potential connections between the two incidents. The FBI has confirmed that both cases are being thoroughly examined.
