Avail of a Special Plenary Indulgence During The Jubilee Year 2025

A Jubilee Year is one of the most important events in the Catholic Church, celebrated every 25 years. As the 2025 Jubilee Year of Hope begins, many Catholics may wonder: How can this jubilee enhance my spiritual life? What exactly is a jubilee church? And how can I take part in the celebrations if I am unable to travel to Rome during the Jubilee Year? Exploring the answers to these questions highlights the great spiritual significance of this extraordinary period of grace.

The Importance of a Jubilee

A jubilee provides an extraordinary opportunity for Catholics to experience God’s transformative holiness and work towards salvation of their souls. In essence, it is a gift that aids believers in their journey towards heaven.

Why? This is because a Jubilee grants the faithful access to various spiritual benefits from the Church's "treasury", such as the 'Jubilee Indulgence'. This is a special plenary indulgence which restores the soul to the state of purity it attained at the time of baptism.

The Gift of Two Plenary Indulgences in One Day

The sacrament of penance forgives sins but does not remove the temporal punishment required by divine justice. However, a Jubilee plenary indulgence remits all the temporal punishment which is required to be served in purgatory, allowing a penitent to go directly to heaven if they die in a state of grace.

During the Jubilee Year, the faithful can obtain two plenary indulgences in one day. Although a rule in the 1983 Code of Canon Law typically limits indulgences to one per day, a second indulgence can be obtained during the Jubilee Year for a deceased soul in purgatory.

Requirements to Obtain the Jubilee Indulgence

To obtain a plenary indulgence during the Jubilee Year of Hope, the Vatican outlines three key conditions:

1. Repentance and detachment from sin (including venial sin)

2. Reception of the Sacrament of Penance and Holy Communion

3. Praying for the pope’s intentions

These acts, if performed with heartfelt sincerity, lead to the remission of all temporal punishment.

Experiencing the Jubilee Through a Pilgrimage to Rome

Pope Francis has invited Catholics from across the world to make a pilgrimage to Rome during the Jubilee Year 2025. In Rome, Catholics will be able to obtain a plenary indulgence by making a pilgrimage to any holy place which has been designated as a church or basilica for the Jubilee Year. In addition to the four main basilicas, there are 13 other churches in Rome to which the faithful can make a pilgrimage in order to receive a plenary indulgence during the jubilee year.

Experiencing the Jubilee Without Pilgrimage to Rome

Those Catholics who are unable to journey to Rome can receive the jubilee plenary indulgence by visiting designated jubilee churches in one’s diocese, as well as designated Marian shrines or basilicas.

For those unable to make a pilgrimage due to serious reasons, the indulgence can still be obtained by reciting prayers like the Our Father and the Profession of Faith, while offering up personal sufferings or hardships in union with the holy year’s objectives.

The plenary indulgence for the jubilee can also be obtained through acts of mercy and penance, such as:

1. Visiting the sick, prisoners, or the elderly

2. Abstaining from “trivial distractions” like social media or excessive consumption for at least one day

Conclusion

The Jubilee Year of Hope offers a profound opportunity to grow in faith, receive God’s grace, and strengthen one’s spiritual life. Whether through pilgrimage, acts of mercy, or personal prayer, this holy year invites every Catholic to experience renewal and transformation in their journey toward heaven.
