Vatican, January 4, 2025: Cardinal Angelo Amato, S.D.B., passed away on 31 December at the age of 86, leaving behind a legacy of devoted service to the Catholic Church. Ordained in 1967, he held several key positions in the Salesian order, was appointed Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2002 by Pope John Paul II, and later served as Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints under Pope Benedict XVI, who elevated him to Cardinal in 2010.
In a telegram addressed to the Vicar of the Rector Major of the Salesians, Pope Francis expressed his condolences and assured his prayers for Cardinal Amato's soul. The Pope highlighted the late Cardinal's faithfulness to his episcopal motto, Sufficit gratia mea (“My grace is sufficient”), noting his profound trust in God even in moments of suffering.
Pope Francis also invoked the intercession of Mary, Help of Christians, and the saints whom Cardinal Amato guided to sainthood, expressing hope that he would be welcomed into the eternal banquet of heaven. Cardinal Amato's life and work remain a testament to his unwavering commitment to the Church and the Salesian charism.
