Heads of Commissions of Patna Archdiocese Meet to Discuss Implementation of Synodal Pathway

Patna, April 4, 2025 – The heads of 24 commissions of the Patna Archdiocese gathered at the Archbishop’s House in Patna on March 26, 2025, to deliberate on the implementation of the Synodal Pathways outlined in the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India’s (CCBI) 36th Plenary Assembly document, “Pilgrims of Hope”. The meeting, led by Archbishop Sebastian Kallupura, aimed to equip the participants with the knowledge and strategies necessary for implementing the synodal process in the Archdiocese of Patna.

Key Highlights of the Meeting

The session commenced with a scripture reading from 2 Corinthians 5:1-10 by Fr. Rakesh, followed by a prayer led by Fr. Gyan Prakash. Archbishop Kallupura welcomed the participants and emphasised the significance of synodality in fostering a participatory and co-responsible Church.

Fr. Sebastin A, the Archdiocesan Synodal contact person, conducted a session titled "What You Should Know About the Synod," underscoring five key focus areas- Structural reforms, Women’s leadership, Laity participation, Implementation and evaluation stages and Spiritual conversation at all levels

Later, participants engaged in an in-depth study of the “Pilgrims of Hope” document, facilitating collaborative reflection on the Synodal Pathways.

Pastoral Plan and Spiritual Conversations

Fr. Sebastin A. also introduced the CCBI’s Pastoral Plan and directed each commission to develop their respective plans in alignment with the CCBI’s plan by September. A structured discussion on the pastoral plan methodology helped members strategise the way forward.

The members were then divided into three groups for spiritual conversation. Group 1 deliberated on implementing the Synodal Path in the Archdiocese of Patna. Group 2 had a discussion on the theme “How to Ensure Dignity for All in the Archdiocese of Patna?” Members of Group 3 deliberated on the topic “How To Strengthen Ecclesial Communities In The Archdiocese?

This exercise trained members in spiritual conversation methods while allowing for discussions based on Archbishop Kallupura’s proposals.

Formation of the Synodal Facilitation Team

In a decisive step toward implementation of the synodal pathway, the members proposed to establish a dedicated Synodal Facilitation Team comprising clergy, religious members, and laity. Individuals whose names were proposed to be a part of the team included Fr. James George, Fr. Sebastin A, Fr. Pious Osta SJ, Sr. Jane SCN, Mr. Raymond, Mrs. Asha Kujur and Mr. Rahul K.

Additionally, Mr. Raymond was appointed head of the Laity Commission, with another layperson soon to lead the Family Commission.

Roadmap for Implementation

The members resolved to adapt synodal recommendations to local cultural and community needs, ensuring relevance and effectiveness. They also decided that the implementation of the Synodal Pathway in the Archdiocese of Patna will follow a structured timeline with preparatory, celebratory, and evaluative phases. Key priorities include promoting women’s leadership, increasing laity participation, and fostering spiritual conversations across all levels of the Church.

The members also decided that synodal initiatives will be integrated into the Archdiocese’s Jubilee celebrations, using these events to reinforce and advance synodal goals.

With a committed Synodal Facilitation Team and a clear roadmap, the Patna Archdiocese is poised to implement the Synodal Pathways effectively, fostering a more inclusive and participatory Church.
