JAMSHEDPUR, Jharkhand, Sept. 23, 2025 — The Diocese of Jamshedpur organised a two-day faith formation programme on September 19 and 20 at St. Joseph Church, Charbandia, a parish under the Diocese of Jamshedpur, for Catholic students of Classes 9 and 10 from neighbouring parishes. 80 students participated in the event, which invited them to reflect on personal and social challenges under the theme “Entering Life with a Renewed Hope as Pilgrims of Hope.” The event sought to deepen the students' faith and nurture in them a hopeful outlook on life through prayer, discussions, and practical activities.
The sessions during the programme were led by Fr. Valerian Lobo, Diocesan Director of Faith Formation, and drew inspiration from the Jubilee 2025 theme “Pilgrims of Hope” and the biblical message “Hope does not disappoint” (Romans 5:5).
Fr. Valerian opened the sessions by explaining that hope is central to Christian living and a gift that helps Christians face life’s challenges bravely. Drawing on Pope Francis’ exhortation Christus Vivit, he reminded everyone that “Christ is alive, and he wants you to be alive!” and that God’s love and mercy empower young people to meet uncertainties with faith and courage. Fr. Valerian cited examples of young biblical figures and saints who trusted in God’s plan, even amidst hardships, to highlight faith as a foundation for hope.
Several key issues affecting youth were discussed during the various sessions of the programme. One among them was the influence of social media and technology addiction. Students examined the risks of excessive screen time, the isolation caused by digital interactions, and the temptation to seek self-worth online. Fr. Valerian urged the youth to embrace authentic, real-world friendships and utilise digital devices in moderation.
Migration, a challenge affecting many local families, was also discussed. Participants were made aware of the disruptive effects migration can have on their careers, their families, relationships, and personal aspirations.
The third main issue discussed was the weakening of family bonds in contemporary society. Drawing from both Christus Vivit and Pope Francis’ teaching, Fr. Valerian urged the youth to renew respect, communication, and affection within their families. He described the family as a “domestic church” and offered practical steps such as spending quality time together, engaging in honest conversations, and praying as a family to strengthen family bonds.
The programme concluded with a commissioning ceremony during which each student pledged to live as a “pilgrim of hope”, carrying the flame of faith into their families, schools, and communities.
The programme left participants with a deeper sense of belonging, a clearer vision for their future, and a renewed commitment to witness hope in all aspects of life—reminded that their journey, though sometimes marked by storms, is firmly anchored in God’s unending love and the supportive embrace of the faith community.
