Cuttack, August 21, 2025: The Daughters of Charity Sisters at Shant Ashram, Cuttack, have been awarded the Certificate for the Best Leprosy Service Programme in the city’s Leprosy Colony. The honour was conferred by the Governor of Odisha yesterday during a special commemorative ceremony.
The event marked the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s arrival in Cuttack, when he visited the Leprosy Colony a hundred years ago. The commemoration not only recalled Gandhi’s compassion and advocacy for the marginalised but also highlighted ongoing efforts to continue his mission of service to those affected by leprosy.
The recognition presented to the Sisters underscores decades of dedicated work in the colony, where they have provided medical care, rehabilitation, and social support for patients and their families. The Shant Ashram community has played a vital role in restoring dignity and hope to people living with the disease, ensuring they are not left behind in society.
In receiving the award, the Daughters of Charity reaffirmed their commitment to serve the poor and vulnerable, drawing inspiration from both their congregation’s mission and Gandhi’s vision of equality and compassion.
The ceremony brought together officials, healthcare workers, and community members who paid tribute to those who have carried forward Gandhi’s legacy of service. The Governor commended the Sisters’ consistent dedication and called their work a “living testimony to Gandhiji’s spirit of selfless service.”
The award is seen as both an honour for the Sisters and a reminder of the ongoing need for awareness, medical intervention, and compassion in addressing leprosy, a disease that still affects many in India despite significant progress in its treatment.
