Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM) Hosts National Mental Health Conference in Kerala

Changanacherry, Kerala, October 14, 2025: The Catholic Mental Health Ministry (CMHM), under the CBCI Office for Healthcare, convened a pivotal National Mental Health Conference from 10–11 October in Changanacherry, Kerala, under the theme “Raising Awareness and Fostering Change.” Bringing together priests, religious, and laity from dioceses nationwide, the event, inaugurated by Bishop Lumen Monteiro, Chairman of the CBCI Office for Healthcare, underscored the Church’s dedication to mental wellness through expert sessions, awards, and a World Mental Health Day celebration.


Bishop Monteiro began the conference, joined by a few other celebrants, urging parishes to establish mental health ministries. 


CMHM marked World Mental Health Day at St. Thomas Hospital, Chethipuzha, led by Archbishop Thomas Tharayil. Joined by Bishops Lumen Monteiro and Alex Vadakumthala, and Fr. Mathew Koyickal, he addressed youth challenges, affirming CMHM’s role in mental health awareness. 


Bishop Vadakumthala stressed family life’s importance, while Fr. Koyickal lauded CMHM’s efforts.


The conference recognised Sr. Rose Paite, MSMHC, with the Jenamma Thomas Mental Health Award for Northeast wellness work, Dr. George Padanilam with the Late Rev. Dr. Antony Mannarkulam Award for disability services and Ms. Rita James with the Chiara Luce Badano Youth Award for advocacy in Delhi.


Regional reports from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Western Region, Agra, Jharkhand, Bihar, and the North East highlighted CMHM’s growing influence.
