MURINGOOR, Kerala, 9 March 2025 – Bishop Selvister Ponnumuthan, Chairman of the CCBI Commission for Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC), introduced the Seven-Step Method of Gospel Sharing to students at the Divine Institute of Bible and Spirituality in Muringoor, Kerala, on 7 March. The session was organised by Rev. Dr. Philip Thayyil VC, Director of the Divine Retreat Centre.
Speaking to Catholic Connect, Bishop Ponnumuthan said he began the session by explaining the history of BECs and their role in building small faith communities. He then conducted a practical session on the Seven-Step Method of Gospel Sharing.
The bishop explained that the method begins with inviting the presence of God to create a prayerful atmosphere. This is followed by reading a selected Bible passage in a meditative manner, allowing the words to resonate with participants. They are then encouraged to identify a verse that speaks to them personally and reflect on its relevance in their lives. A period of silence follows, offering time for deeper contemplation and allowing the message to take root.
Emphasising the significance of community engagement, Bishop Ponnumuthan described sharing as the most crucial step. He encouraged participants to express what God had revealed to them through Scripture, strengthening faith within the group. The process continues with evaluation, where individuals reflect on their experience of prayer and discussion. This step also allows space for broader conversations on faith and social concerns. The session concludes with a collective prayer and a renewed commitment to live out the Gospel message in daily life.
Bishop Ponnumuthan stressed the importance of Scripture and prayer in strengthening BECs. “Without the Word of God and prayer, the BEC will never be strengthened,” he said.
He added that participants, including priests, expressed great enthusiasm for the session and noted that such exercises are essential for fostering spiritual growth and strengthening the Christian community.
