Western Region BEC Leaders Forge New Synodal Direction

Pune, July 6, 2024: In a groundbreaking move, the Western Regional Council of Basic Ecclesial Communities (BEC) has pioneered a new synodal approach for BEC gatherings, prioritizing listening and collective journeying.

At the two-day meeting held at Nav Sadhana Pastoral Centre in Pune from July 3-4, 2024, directors of BECs and lay animators from across the western region converged to forge new pathways for BECs.

Bishop John Rodrigues, Bishop of Poona, presided over the gathering, emphasizing the council's alignment with the Church's ongoing programs, including the Year of Jubilee and the Year of Prayer.

Bishop Rodrigues urged participants to study key Church documents, such as Lumen Gentium and Gaudium et Spes, to deepen their understanding of synodality. Fr. George Jacob, Executive Secretary, delivered a motivational session on the CCBI Pastoral Plan and the BEC Commission's strategic objectives, highlighting the importance of grassroots ministry.

Jennifer Fernandes, a member of the National Service Team (NST), provided practical insights on establishing ministries and apostolates within each BEC. Her session aimed to equip participants with tangible strategies for community building and pastoral outreach.

Throughout the meeting, delegates engaged in group discussions and collaborative planning sessions, tailoring systematic courses of action to each diocese's unique needs and challenges. This new synodal approach marks a significant shift in the BEC's approach, prioritizing collective listening and journeying together.
