30,000 Gather for Historic First-of-its-Kind Mass Honouring Pope Leo at Chicago’s Rate Field

Chicago, June 16, 2025: In a landmark celebration unlike any before, over 30,000 faithful filled Chicago’s Rate Field on Saturday for a first-of-its-kind Mass honouring Pope Leo XIV—the first American pope. The event transformed the South Side baseball stadium into a spiritual sanctuary, as believers from across the region gathered not for a game, but to receive a blessing.

The celebration featured a special video message from Pope Leo XIV, formerly Robert Prevost of Chicago’s South Side, who has long been known as a devoted White Sox fan. Just days before the event, he was spotted wearing a White Sox cap—an affectionate nod to his hometown roots.

Cardinal Blase J. Cupich led the sold-out Mass, with beloved Chicago Bulls announcer Chuck Swirsky hosting the programme. Gates opened at 12:30 p.m., the programme began at 2:30 p.m., and the Mass commenced at 4 p.m.

The gathering included musical performances, films, live testimonials and communal prayers, all of which created a moving and deeply spiritual atmosphere.

As thousands received Holy Communion on the stadium field, many described the experience as profoundly uplifting. It marked the first time Rate Field played host to such a massive religious gathering—an unforgettable day of unity, faith and celebration in the heart of the city.
