Vatican City, 18 May, 2025 – Pope Leo XIV will be formally inaugurated today as Bishop of Rome during a solemn Mass at 10:00 am (01:30 PM, Indian Standard Time) in St. Peter’s Square, marking the beginning of his Petrine ministry.
The Pope will begin the ceremony with a moment of silent prayer before the tomb of the Apostle Peter inside St. Peter’s Basilica. The liturgy will follow the “Order of Rites of the Beginning of the Petrine Ministry”, established by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005 and revised in 2013.
A crowd of thousands is expected to gather in the square, alongside more than 300 dignitaries and royals from around the world. Confirmed attendees include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Second Lady Usha Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Edward, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Dutch Queen Maxima, and Prime Minister Dick Schoof.
After the Mass, Pope Leo XIV will lead the Regina Caeli in the square and greet official delegations in St. Peter’s Basilica. He is scheduled to take canonical possession of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, on 25 May.
