Pope Leo XIV to Receive Pallium and Ring, Emblems of Papal Authority

Vatican City, 18 May, 2025- During his installation ceremony at St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope Leo XIV will receive two of the most significant symbols of papal authority: the pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring. These ancient emblems will formally mark the beginning of his leadership over the Catholic Church.

The pallium, a narrow circular band made of white lamb’s wool, will be draped over the Pope’s shoulders. Two strips will hang down the front and back, forming a Y-shape, and six black crosses will adorn the garment. Worn over a green chasuble, the pallium will symbolise the pope’s role as shepherd of the universal Church and his unity with metropolitan archbishops, who must also receive it before exercising authority in their provinces.

The Fisherman’s Ring, engraved with an image of Saint Peter casting his net, will be placed on Pope Leo XIV’s finger as a sign of his succession to the apostle and his supreme pastoral mission. Traditionally, the ring is used to seal official documents and serves as a hallmark of papal office.

The origins of the pallium date back to the Roman Empire, adapted from the Greek himation and once worn by emperors as a badge of office. It became a Christian vestment in the 4th and 5th centuries and a papal bestowal by the 6th.

By receiving the pallium and ring, Pope Leo XIV will embrace the heritage of his office and affirm his commitment to leading the Church through unity, humility, and service.
