Pope Leo XIV Greets Thousands in Inaugural Popemobile Ride

Vatican City, 18 May, 2025 - Pope Leo XIV made a striking entrance into his papacy on Sunday, riding through a jubilant crowd in St. Peter’s Square aboard the popemobile. The appearance came ahead of his formal installation as the 267th pontiff of the Catholic Church and was witnessed by an estimated 250,000 people, including global dignitaries.

Born Robert Prevost in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV becomes the first American and the second Latin American to lead the Church. Elected on 8 May following the death of Pope Francis on 21 April, he brings a unique cultural background shaped by his years as an Augustinian missionary in Peru.

As the popemobile moved through the square, Pope Leo XIV smiled and waved at a sea of flags from Peru, the United States, and the Holy See. The bells of St. Peter’s Basilica pealed in celebration, underscoring the historic moment.

Following the ride, he observed traditional rites, praying at St. Peter’s tomb and receiving the pallium and the Fisherman’s Ring—symbols of his spiritual authority and global pastoral mission.

In his initial remarks, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Vatican’s role as a bridge for peace and diplomacy. He signalled a papacy focused on global unity and the ethical challenges posed by emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

The full vision of his pontificate is expected to unfold during his inaugural homily.
