Transgender Dignity and Inclusion Central to Christmas Message, Says HASSS Director

Hyderabad, Dec. 18, 2025 : Emphasising the need for sustained inclusion and respect for transgender persons, Anthony Madanu, Executive Director of the Hyderabad Archdiocese Social Service Society (HASSS), said the true meaning of Christmas lay in standing in solidarity with marginalised communities.

Addressing more than 130 transgender persons at a Christmas programme organised by HASSS in Hyderabad on Wednesday, Mr. Madanu said engagement with the transgender community should not be limited to symbolic celebrations. He stressed the importance of long-term support through education, livelihood opportunities and institutional recognition to ensure dignity and equality.

The programme was held under the guidance of Cardinal Poola Anthony, Archbishop of Hyderabad. Mr. Madanu highlighted HASSS initiatives aimed at economic empowerment of transgender persons, including their engagement as traffic assistants and as members of Pink Squads at metro railway stations, which he said helped promote social acceptance and financial independence.

Announcing further steps, he said HASSS had appointed Sindu, a transgender community member, to coordinate programmes focused on transgender welfare and inclusion. He added that the distribution of dry ration kits to around 100 transgender persons during the festive season was part of the organisation’s immediate support measures.

HASSS said its work with the transgender community over the past three-and-a-half years has included the formation of self-help groups, livelihood training programmes and advocacy for gender inclusivity in educational institutions.
