RSS Workers Arrested After Attack on Christmas Carol Group in Palakkad, Kerala

Palakkad, Kerala, Dec 23, 2025 — Police in Palakkad have arrested RSS workers in connection with an attack on a Christmas carol group, including children, during a house-to-house carol performance in the district, triggering widespread condemnation and raising concerns over communal intolerance during the festive season.

The incident occurred late Sunday evening in the Pudussery–Kasaba area when the carol group was singing Christmas hymns as part of a local celebration. According to police, the group was stopped by the accused, who questioned their presence and objected to the carol programme. An argument followed, during which members of the group were allegedly assaulted and musical instruments damaged.

Based on complaints from the victims and eyewitness accounts, Kasaba police registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to unlawful restraint, causing hurt and disturbing public peace. The arrested persons have been identified as RSS workers, police confirmed.

No serious injuries were reported, but parents and residents said the attack traumatised the children, some of whom were minors. Police said statements of the carol group members and local residents have been recorded and further investigation is under way to ascertain whether more persons were involved.

The incident has drawn sharp reactions from political parties, civil so, Kerala ciety groups and church representatives, who described the attack as an assault on religious freedom and communal harmony. They demanded strict action against those responsible and protection for minority communities during religious observances.

Police officials said law and order has been brought under control in the area and appealed to the public to maintain calm. The accused are expected to be produced before a magistrate, while authorities indicated that no one would be spared if further involvement is established.

The Palakkad incident comes amid heightened concern over attacks on Christmas-related events in different parts of the country, even as Kerala has traditionally been seen as a state with a strong record of inter-religious coexistence.
