Raiganj Diocese Holds Orientation on Synodality and Basic Ecclesial Communities

Raiganj, West Bengal, April 3, 2025 – Around 150 priests and religious sisters from the Raiganj Diocese participated in a two-day orientation on Synodality and Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) at the Bishop’s House on March 26–27, 2025. The programme, aimed at strengthening BECs in parishes, was inaugurated by Bishop Fulgence Aloysius Tigga. In his address, the bishop emphasised the role of BECs in fostering the Synodal themes of communion, participation, and mission within the Church.

Sr. Christin Joseph, HC, a member of the National Service Team for BEC, elaborated on the vital role BECs play in fostering a Synodal Church. Using various examples, she highlighted how Gospel sharing and regular BEC meetings are essential for embodying the themes of the Synod on Synodality.

In another session titled “Pilgrimage of Hope and Basic Ecclesial Communities”, she demonstrated how BECs bring hope to parishes. She also presented a video featuring Lingthem village in the Darjeeling Diocese, where a BEC-led initiative successfully built a three-kilometre footpath in collaboration with Buddhist neighbours and the local Panchayat.

Fr. I.P. Sarto, Regional BEC Coordinator for West Bengal and Sikkim, addressed the challenges posed by the Final Document of the Synod 2024. He identified ten major challenges in transitioning from a hierarchical Church to a Synodal Church. Using real-life examples, he urged participants to embrace cordiality, humility, and openness to evolving realities. He also emphasised the importance of promoting lay leadership in various aspects of Church life.

Throughout the orientation, several participants reaffirmed their commitment to BECs. Fr. Lawrence Hansda, a young priest, underscored the significance of BECs in rural villages. Former Vicar General Fr. S. Santhappan emphasised the need for priests to motivate the laity to take on leadership roles as parish animators. Meanwhile, Fr. Perianayagam Moses, SJ, stressed the importance of ongoing support and guidance for priests to sustain the enthusiasm of BECs and navigate the challenges of the Synod.

Sr. Christin also presented a video on agriculture and BECs, underscoring the importance of equipping villagers and animators with a deep understanding of BEC principles before initiating Gospel sharing. She emphasised that fostering communion among communities must be the foundation of any BEC initiative.

Bishop Tigga assured participants that the diocese would continue to organise regular orientations for both clergy and laity to effectively implement Synodality.

Many priests pledged to revitalise BECs in their parishes, with some planning to conduct animation sessions for the laity in the coming months.
