Pope to Students: “Do Not Let Technology Use You"

Vatican City, October 31, 2025: Pope Leo XIV addressed hundreds of university students during the Jubilee of the World of Education, urging them not to let technology use them, but instead to harness it for human growth, fraternity and creativity.

In his address at the Paul VI Audience Hall, the Pope referenced two recently canonised young saints — Pier Giorgio Frassati and Carlo Acutis — who embodied the motto “to the heights” and used technology as a tool for good rather than allowing it to dominate their lives.

He encouraged students to “look to the sky, to the heights” rather than remaining fixated on smartphones and superficial pleasures.

Addressing the digital world, the Pope warned that although artificial intelligence is powerful, “it must be used to act humanely.” He called for education to form not just minds, but hearts, saying: “We must learn to humanise the digital, building it as a space of fraternity and creativity — not a cage where you lock yourselves in, not an addiction or an escape.”

He also emphasised a new season of education in which students are protagonists, not mere consumers. He urged them to be part of creating “educational constellations” that light the path forward for society and help build a future marked by dignity, justice and shared belonging.
