Christian Burial Board Launches ‘Dignity Burial / Shamman Samadhi’ Initiative in Kolkata

Kolkata, October 31, 2025: The Christian Burial Board inaugurated its new initiative, Dignity Burial / Shamman Samadhi, at the 184 Lower Circular Road Cemetery in Kolkata. The project aims to ensure that every individual, regardless of financial status, receives a dignified burial free of cost.

Under the programme, a dedicated area has been created within the Lower Circular Road Cemetery for families unable to meet burial expenses, reflecting the Board’s guiding principle, “Dignity in Every Farewell.”

The inauguration ceremony was graced by Sudip Bandopadhyay, Member of Parliament, who served as the Chief Guest. Two sisters from Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity were a part of the inauguration, symbolising compassion and service to humanity. During the event, Shri Bandopadhyay announced a contribution of ₹20 lakhs from his MP LAD fund to support the development of the Lower Circular Road Cemetery.

Also present were Fr. Moloy D’Costa, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Calcutta, and Derek O’Brien, Member of Parliament.

The second Dignity Burial / Shamman Samadhi is set to open early next year at the Tollygunge Cemetery. Speaking about the initiative, Denise Smith of the Christian Burial Board said: “This initiative will extend our mission of compassion, ensuring that those inmates who spend their final days in the care of the Missionaries of Charity homes are laid to rest with dignity, peace, and respect.”

Through this effort, the Christian Burial Board reaffirms its commitment to serve the community with empathy and respect.
