Vatican, January 6, 2025: Speaking to a delegation commemorating the anniversaries of Italian Catholic education associations, the Holy Father called on teachers, parents, and institutions to embody hope and dialogue in their educational mission. Pope Francis emphasized the importance of closeness, compassion, and tenderness as essential qualities of God's pedagogy while addressing educators at the Vatican on Saturday, January 4. The event marked the 80th anniversary of the Italian Catholic Teachers Association and the Union of Italian Catholic Teachers, Principals, Educators, and Trainers, alongside the 50th anniversary of the Association of Parents of Catholic Schools.
God's language of Love
In his address, Pope Francis reflected on God's "educational method," describing it as rooted in the Christmas season's themes of living in loving communion with Him and others. He likened God to a teacher who enters the world of their students, living among them and teaching through life and love. The Pope urged educators to foster universal fraternity and highlighted the irreplaceable role of the family in this mission.
“Please, in families, let’s talk!”
The Pontiff shared a striking anecdote about a family dining in silence, engrossed in their mobile phones. Urging families to prioritize dialogue, he stressed, "A family is about dialogue, and dialogue helps us grow." He also warned against bullying in schools, stating that it undermines peace and prepares children for conflict rather than harmony.
Teachers as Pilgrims of Hope
Reflecting on the Jubilee journey and its theme, "Pilgrims of Hope," Pope Francis described teachers as "people of hope" who invest trust and patience in the growth of others. He encouraged them to root their efforts in the dignity and vocation of every individual. The Pope also called for a "pact among associations" to strengthen the Church's role in education. He emphasized supporting young teachers starting their careers and families navigating educational challenges.
Concluding his remarks, Pope Francis imparted his Apostolic Blessing, urging educators to cultivate peace, promote dialogue, and embrace hope as a guiding force in their work. "Hope never disappoints," he reminded the audience, underscoring the transformative power of compassionate and tender education.
