Pope Leo Calls for End to Arms Trade and Emphasis on Human Dignity

Castel Gandolfo, July 23, 2025 – As he concluded a 16-day retreat at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo and returned to the Vatican this evening, Pope Leo issued a strong appeal against war and the arms trade, urging the world to uphold human dignity and work towards peace.

“We must encourage everyone to leave weapons behind, and to leave behind the money-making that is behind every war,” the Pope told journalists gathered outside the residence. He returned to the Vatican shortly before 9 p.m. and took time to engage with reporters before his departure.

When asked about the possibility of visiting conflict zones such as Gaza, Pope Leo responded, “There are many places I would like to go, but this is not necessarily the formula for finding an answer.”

He also condemned the global arms trade, stating, “Many times, with the arms trade, people become just tools without any value.” Emphasising the inherent dignity of all people, the Pope added, “We must constantly insist on the dignity of every human being—Christian, Muslim, people of every religion. We are all God's children, created in God's image. So we will continue this effort.”

Reflecting on his time at Castel Gandolfo, the Pope said it was “a working holiday,” during which he remained closely informed of world affairs. “I was able to have a change of scene,” he said, “but I never stopped following current events.”

“Thank God the voice of the Church is still important,” he concluded. “Let us continue to promote peace.”
